Youth Basketball Updates

Did you know that our programs are specifically named based on the format? In all of our youth sports programs, we have: clinics, academies, instructional leagues, and leagues. See below for a quick review of each programs format:

ACADEMIES/CLINICS: Academies are ran by paid CARD staff that have extensive experience in the sport. This program will focus on fine tuning skills that players need work on. Program format will be similar to a "basketball camp" except spread out to once a week (rather than consecutive days, like a camp). Academies highlight stations and big group drills that will help any player improve their game. Game play is not only scrimmaging, but "game like" scenarios that will help players learn the game- like 3 on 3, Steal the Bacon, 3 on 2/2 on 1, etc. Academies will have a "Director" that is in charge of the format, and other staff. The Director is a great person to ask questions to, or share feedback with.

INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUES/PROGRAMS: Instructional leagues are ran by paid CARD staff that have experience specific to the sport.  Players will not receive a phone call from a specific "coach" and should instead just show up the first day of the program ready to play! The first 2-3 weeks of the program will focus on the staff having the participants learn techniques and fundamentals through stations and drills. Staff are experienced in dealing with different skill levels and are able to adapt to each player's needs. The last 2-3 weeks will include players being broken up into "teams" to scrimmage. Teams switch around each week to give players the opportunity to learn from different coaching styles (and learn from different teammates). Score is not kept, and instead the focus is creating an environment that is positive and where mistake are okay to make- since that is how to become a better player! Games will be periodically stopped to remind players of rules or game strategy. Instructional Leagues will have a "Director" that is in charge of the format, and other staff. The Director is a great person to ask questions to, or share feedback with.

LEAGUES: Our leagues are what most people associate with any "sports league." Each team is assigned a coach (volunteer coaches for our elementary basketball teams, and a paid coach for our jr. high/high school teams) that is responsible for the team logistics. Your coach is your main contact for the league. The coach will contact you and let you know of the first practice time and location, and that there will be a short parent meeting after the first practice. The parent meeting is crucial to attend because it gives the coach the opportunity to introduce themselves and explain their coaching philosophy. Each team will then practice at least once a week with their coach (hopefully a throughout, progressive practice plan) and have a game once a week. Game schedules are posted on teamsideline.com/chico, and officials will be provided for each game. There is an end of season tournament for all teams 5th grade and older- that is a single elimination based on the standings from the league.

Elementary Basketball League Update: NEW this year, we have added a 2nd grade league, and  staggered the 2nd and 3rd grade leagues with the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade leagues. Our goal is to open up more gym space for our teams, allow higher quality officials more shifts (and more time to train for the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade leagues), more time to recruit for volunteers, and allow us to focus more on each league to improve the over all quality! Other than the date staggering, the leagues will essentially stay the same: team formation will still stay the same, genders will be separated, coaches will practices once a week, with games on Saturdays. In order to compensate for the "staggering" dates- and to never leave a group without the opportunity to play basketball- we have added  the "Academies" for the divisions that have the "off season"!
